The Embedded Message: Quilting in Contemporary Art
Visual Arts Center of Richmond
December 1, 2017 - February 11, 2018
This exhibition explores how a current generation of contemporary artists are employing quilt traditions and techniques to make social, political and personal commentary. These textile-based sculptures presented on the wall and floor exemplify the ways in which 13 selected American artists mine the historic meaning, techniques and processes of traditional quilt making. In so doing, the pieces collectively uphold the legacy of quilt making, typically used for commemoration of social events, history, community and lineage, as a relevant, conceptual and strategic art form for the cultural expressions of today.
